IN THE STUDIO WITH ARTIST LOUISA CHIRCOP
Australian Artist Louisa Chircop uses a variety of styles and influences to create her intriguing pieces that speak about the human condition. When she’s not adding layers, symbols and signs into her drawings and paintings, she’s working on building up her creative business. Here she talks with us about her journey as a Creative Founder and the importance of building a marketing infrastructure around your art practice.
1. Can you tell us a little bit about your journey to establishing yourself as an artist?
Establishing yourself as an artist takes many years, it also takes steps along the way. It always feels like you are always establishing yourself in many ways because every bit of experience credits you that little bit more. Having a professional infrastructure around my art practice has helped, like establishing great business tools i.e.: website and documenting my work. Gaining professional experiences through showing opportunities and art prizes help tremendously. Establishing yourself as an artist never really ends.
2. How would you describe your work, and how have you seen it progress over time?
My work is all about the human condition and as I search for meaning it tends to fluctuate with my mood because I rely heavily on my intuition and subconscious thoughts to create work. I have seen my work change over time in terms of technique and the eclectic nature of how I work.
3. You are the 2016 Artist In Residence for the PLC Sydney Artist In Residence program. What is the best advice you can give a young artist?
Be yourself and project your own truth.
4. In today’s digital world, how important is gallery representation in marketing yourself as an artist?
I believe that artists whether with a gallery or not, need to give themselves a marketing presence. You have to create opportunities for your work to be seen both in the digital world and real gallery spaces. The work is you and you are the work, so a gallery will always benefit from an artist exposing themselves to different and new audiences.
5. We understand you recently launched a new website on Square Space, can you tell us what content you feel is important for artists to showcase on their website?
Yes I have, I think it’s really important to show how active you are being. Having a “latest Projects” and “latest news” helps give currency to your practice and gives it relevance.
5. What is your social media of choice for promoting your art?
Definitely Instagram
6. If you were offered 10 free hours with a marketing consultant, what areas of your art business would you like support with?
General design and branding for effective marketing tools.
7. You are currently based in Sydney Australia, are there any communities in your area that you know of that support artists and creative entrepreneurs?
No.
8. Can you highlight one female artist in your community you find inspiring and you would like to shine the spotlight on?
